Ursocol (UDCA) is a type of secondary bile acid, which results from the metabolism of intestinal bacteria. The liver produces primary bile acids, which are then stored in the gall bladder. Once they are released into the colon, these primary bile acids can be transformed into secondary bile acids by intestinal bacteria. Both primary and secondary bile acids play a crucial role in the digestion of fats.
Ursodeoxycholic acid is a bile acid that the body produces naturally and is kept in the gallbladder. Ursocol (UDCA) assists in managing cholesterol levels by diminishing the absorption rate of cholesterol in the intestine and by disrupting micelles that contain cholesterol. Due to this characteristic, Ursocol (UDCA) is employed for the non-surgical treatment of gallstones.
Adults: Take 6-12 mg/kg daily as a single dose at bedtime or in 2-3 divided doses for 3-4 months after radiological evidence of stone disappearance. Doses may be adjusted unevenly, with a higher dose administered before bedtime to mitigate the rise in biliary cholesterol saturation that happens in the early morning. Maximum: 15 mg/kg. For those with hepatic impairment: exercise caution in cases of chronic liver disease (excluding primary biliary cirrhosis).
Precautions: Be cautious if there is a history of liver, gallbladder, pancreas, or bile duct conditions. Also take care during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Frequent side effects include diarrhea, stomach issues, itching, back pain, nausea, and vomiting.
Interactions: The effectiveness of Ursocol (UDCA) may be decreased by cholestyramine, charcoal, and antacids. Oestrogens and clofibrate might reduce the effectiveness of ursodeoxycholic acid by promoting cholesterol elimination in bile. Dapsone may be less effective. Antacids containing aluminum may hinder absorption.
